ROBBIE M.

My name is Rob and I'm a 28 year old designer in Edmonton studying to be an architect.

I'm a soon-to-be Dad with a bratty husky-shepherd puppy named Lupo.

I'm usually designing or building something in my free time and am hoping to build a little cabin in BC next summer.

You can follow my process work @robertmyguy for all puppy pics, halfer baby pics and nerdy woodworking stuff.

Also, Chris and I used to dress and look VERY similar, we could've passed for brothers. Lucky for Chris his drip just skyrocketed as he got older, I on the other hand went the other way…

What motivated you to get tattooed in the first place?

  • I think popular media and fashion had me curious about tattoos in the first place. I grew up in a pretty strict matricultural Filipino household so it never crossed my mind until I moved away, but once I left for university I started to get more interested in piercings and tattoo history - mainly traditional stuff.

What was your first tattoo and how did you select the design? Who was the artist? How old were you?

  • I was 18 when I got my first tattoo, on my birthday I think. My Dad took me to see Spencer Evans (@spencerevanstattoos) at Eye of the Lotus. I saw a Sailor Jerry ship-in-a-bottle tattoo and I wanted to have the lettering replaced with 'Old Man's Poison'.

  • Kind of weird looking back on it, but I'm sure there are more embarrassing first tattoos out there. My mom was pissed.

How many tattoos do you currently have?

  • I have 10 tattoos at the moment. It's been a few years since I've been tattooed last. 11 if you count my cover-up.

How do you decide on what type of tattoo design(s) to get prior to booking an appointment?

  • Early on I'd search out for traditional tattoo artists in whatever city I was living in at the time, whether it was Vancouver, Calgary, or Toronto. I usually have some artifacts or mementos I'd like represented in a traditional style, but there have been a handful of times where I've flipped through some flash book and thought to myself "this spot is empty".

What were some of the most painful spots to get tattooed for you?

  • Unlike my pals, I haven't had the pleasure of having my chest, knee or elbow tattooed yet, but I do have one that borders my elbow. I remember that one being a bit uncomfortable, but I'm also a twitchy guy and probably moved like an eel for the whole thing. Guaranteed my own doing.

Do you have any favourite tattoos?

  • Definitely my tattoos from Sarah Keeley (@sarahkeeley) and Katie So (@ghostmeadow), but the one that means most to me has got to be the Lovely Souls tattoo. Reminds me of some good fun times, now I'm just a boring dad going to grad school.

Who are some of the artists that you've gotten tattooed by?

What do you like about the particular style(s) of tattoos that you've chosen to get done?

  • The boldness of lineweights and a generally restrained colour palette in traditional style tattoos.

What artist(s) would you like to get tattooed by in the future?
